LinkedIn Celtic Tree Reception Piece

  • The Task

The Seek Design team reached out to Nineyards for assistance in developing further a design concept for a stunning ceiling sculpture to be featured in LinkedIn’s new Dublin headquarters reception area off Grand Canal.

  • The Idea

The artwork was inspired by the Celtic Tree of Life, known as Crann Bethadh. It was to be created by layering rings of paper to create the effect of sunlight shining through the leaves of trees. At Nineyards, we go beyond just admiring a design. With our experience in the light and sound industry, we brainstorm ways to enhance and amplify its impact. Together with Seek’s designers, we presented these ideas to the LinkedIn team, who were eager to explore further. Crann Bethadh was to become an intelligent living sculpture and talking piece sitting on the banks of Dublin’s Grand Canal

  • Our Approach

The creative intent of the living piece was now mapped out. We collaborated with David Kitt, a talented sound designer, to create the sound effects. Additionally, we worked with some of the world’s top producers and programmers to develop the technology aspects of the project allowing the piece to intelligently react to the weather, seasons, time of day and the occupancy of the building.

The physical appearance was redesigned to maintain its purpose, while also accommodating lighting and concealed speakers, all the while allowing paper to be the primary material, visible from both below and the street.

To accommodate the necessary rigging structure, a significant portion of the reception ceiling area was needed. Therefore, it was essential to coordinate closely with the LinkedIn principal contracting team.

Our team faced a significant challenge in creating the paper-based structure. Since paper is not commonly used as a construction material, we had to carefully research and develop the best way to incorporate it into the core of the structure. We aimed to ensure that the paper retained its paper-like appearance and behaviour, while also meeting fire safety and durability standards for long-term use. After several months of research and development, we achieved a result that we are confident will serve LinkedIn for many years to come.

Apart from the physical aspects, we should also acknowledge the accomplishment of sound recording and programming. The process involved several weeks of on-site recording during four different seasons leading up to the installation of the system. Additionally, there were many long days of programming, both on and off-site.

  • The Result

In the early summer of 2022, the Crann Bethadh installation at LinkedIn was successfully completed. The team consisted of 14 individuals, including a site supervisor, rigging team, specialist craftspeople, engineers, and programmers. The 10-meter rigging structure was assembled and 365 individual sheets of paper were hung.

Contributing to the first impression on arrival to the Linkedin reception the Crann Bethadh installation cannot be missed.
